FAQ
What is a Vehicle Registration Bond?
A Vehicle Registration Bond is a $5,000 bond that allows the principal to process California motor vehicle registrations from a licensed location. The bond protects the DMV against any fraud the principal may commit or injury s/he may cause. You should have already applied to do this with the DMV if this is the bond you are looking for.
What is a Vehicle Verifier Bond?
A Vehicle Verifier Bond is a $5,000 bond that allows the principle to verify vehicle documentation against physical inspection of vehicle in order to attest that they are accurately matched. You should have already applied to do this with the DMV if this is what you are looking for.
What is a DMV Dealer Bond?
Auto dealer surety bonds are required to guarantee the dealer operates per the terms of the state (see state specific rules and regulations). They are also referred to as a DMV bond, used car dealer bond, and MVD bond.
What is the Current Market for DMV Bonds?
The surety bond industry has become more conservative when reviewing motor vehicle dealer bonds. Lower rates are still available for those who qualify, but those with sub-par credit are being forced into high risk programs.
How do I know if I need a $10,000 or a $50,000 bond?
$10,000 dealer bonds are required for people who sell motorcycles or ATVs, or are wholesale dealers selling fewer than 25 cars per year. $50,000 dealer bonds are required for people selling cars retail, or wholesale dealers selling more than 25 cars per year.
Can you submit my DMV Bond directly to the DMV?
All DMV dealer bonds need to be signed by the dealer prior to submission to the DMV, so must be mailed to you and submitted by you.
Can I buy multiple years?
DMV bonds can usually be purchased at 1,2, and 3 year rates, but bond companies will limit people with credit-related issues to one year.
What if I have bad credit?
If you have credit related issues, DMV bonds can be difficult to secure, and can require collateral. We will be happy to try several companies on your behalf to ascertain the best option for you.
